THE BIRTHSTONES OF DECEMBER: TANZANITE AND TURQUOISE

December is a month of celebration, and for those born during this festive time, they have two birthstones to choose from: tanzanite and turquoise.

What is tanzanite?

Tanzanite is a beautiful blue to violet gemstone that belongs to the zoisite mineral family. It was discovered relatively recently, in the 1960s, and has since become sought after due to its vibrant colour and remarkable clarity.

Where is tanzanite found?

Tanzanite is found exclusively in one place: the Mererani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This limited geographical source makes Tanzanite incredibly rare and highly coveted.

History of tanzanite

Tanzanite's discovery is thanks to a Maasai tribesman named Ali Juuyawatu in 1967. Legend has it that a wildfire caused by lightning set the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro ablaze, and when the smoke cleared, the previously brown zoisite crystals had transformed into stunning blue gems. Tiffany & Co. recognised Tanzanite’s potential and introduced it to the world, naming it after its country of origin.

What is turquoise?

Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones, loved for its unique blue-green colour and historic significance. It is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium, often featuring striking veins of matrix that add to its character.

Where is turquoise found?

Turquoise is mined in several locations around the world, with prominent sources including Iran, Egypt, the southwestern United States, and China. Each source produces Turquoise with distinct characteristics and quality.

History of turquoise

Turquoise has been used in jewellery for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians decorated themselves with turquoise as early as 3,000BC. Native American cultures also highly valued turquoise, using it in ceremonial pieces and as a trade commodity.

Which is rarer?

While both tanzanite and turquoise are considered precious, tanzanite is significantly rarer due to its limited geographical source. The single-location mining makes it a unique and highly prized gemstone. Turquoise, though found in multiple locations, can vary greatly in quality and rarity depending on its source.

Whether you are drawn to the rare and radiant allure of tanzanite or the timeless and tranquil charm of turquoise, December’s birthstones offer an array of options for jewellery design.
